School Garden Design in Toowoomba – Lost Garden of Queenie

Lost Garden of Queenie is a thoughtfully crafted school garden design in Toowoomba for Toowoomba Anglican School. It supports students from Prep through to Year 12 and places a strong focus on meaningful outdoor spaces for boarding students.

Many of these students come from rural and regional backgrounds. For this reason, the garden provides wide open spaces, layered landscapes, and places to explore. In turn, the landscape helps balance campus life with a sense of freedom, nature, and connection to the land.

Importantly, imaginative stories and student artwork directly shaped the design. Their ideas guide the character, magic, and narrative of the space. The site includes a complex 10-metre level change. As a result, the design terraces and layers the landscape to work with the natural topography. Planting also plays a structural role, forming a series of connected garden rooms.

Moreover, the story of Queenie; a horse once said to roam the paddock, sits alongside tales of an old lady and her ruined garden walls. These stories appear through evocative spaces, a reimagined “old home,” a gathering amphitheatre, and playful elements such as a hidden hobbit home.

Ultimately, the result is an immersive educational landscape that encourages wonder, wellbeing, storytelling, and everyday discovery.
